ΑAcademicians and independent researchers from Greece, Great Britain and the USA presented at the 1st Pan-Hellenic Conference on Mythology (held in Athens in May 2016), new positions and opinions on scientific research concerning the historical basis of various religions beliefs and personalities.

In their presentations, issues such as the following were approached: the relationship of Jesus with pre-Christian solar cults, the Mythological investigation of iconographic types, doctrines and customs such as the infant Mary, the transfiguration of the Virgin Mary and the Anastenaria, the importance of mythical thought and its extensions ancient Greek worldview in Christianity, the beginnings of the problematic surrounding the historicity of Jesus, the case of prosecution of a Greek Mythicist in the early 80s, but also the contemporary international trends of the Mythicist current.

These original speeches are presented in this volume in their entirety, with additional informational material and photographs.

Author Biography

Mythicism is a largely unknown current of ideas in Greece that has its roots in the late 18th century, in Enlightenment Europe. It examines the history of religions and through the use of a series of scientific tools and thematic fields (history, archaeology, comparative mythology, ethnology, etc.) attempts to separate myth from historical reality. Today, the mythic research that has been carried out regarding the problem of the historicity of Jesus, the questioning of the historical presence of the leading figure of Christianity and the common archetypal elements he presents in the evangelical accounts with a series of mythical and historical figures from different religious traditions of the Mediterranean basin (and not only). The stream of Mythicism consists of various schools of thought and approaches that have developed over the centuries.

The following participate in their work: Radamanthys Anastasakis (Founder of the Philosophy Center "Ideotheater"), Evrynomi Gavras (Lawyer-Assistant Doctor of Philosophy), George Gousgounis (researcher), Stratos Theodosiou (Professor at the University of Athens), George Ioannidis (psychologist-author), George Lekakis (journalist-folklorist), Harita Mini (philologist-author), Ioannis-Parmenidis Bousiou (culturalist), Stefanos Paipetis (late Professor of the University of Patras), Christos-Pandion Panopoulos (culturalist), Minas Papageorgiou (journalist-author), Kenneth Humphreys (historian-author).
