A lot has been heard and written lately about people-magnets, that is, people with the unknown – however strange – ability to attract various kinds of objects with their bodies. A quick search on YouTube or Google Videos will convince you of the truth (keywords: magnetic people).
You will see the family of Lin Yu-Zhong (Taiwan) and the elderly Liew Thow Lin (Malaysia) doing impressive (at least at first glance) things on camera: sticking cutlery to their chests and foreheads, lifting heavy objects with belly, even pulling entire cars with chains that seem "magnetically" stuck to their skin!
So let's introduce you to the magnetic people that the media loves to put on the glass and most people are convinced of their incredible abilities in a matter of minutes.
First, we need to understand what magnetism is. It is an existential force that manifests itself from a distance and physical contact is not necessary. Also, equally important, is that some objects are not magnetic, i.e. they are not attracted by magnetic fields, such as e.g. aluminum, glass, plastic, etc.
Bearing in mind all the above, I have two very basic observations to make. First, why is the supposed magnetic force not manifested at a distance (no magnetic man has ever been able to make objects move and stick to him from a distance of even a few millimeters, which is done even by very weak magnets)? Second, how do we talk about magnetism when non-magnetic objects are supposed to be attracted, such as brass keys in Brenda Allison's case, glass ashtrays from the Lin Yu-Zhong family, and plastic cups from Miroslaw Magola?
The above observations concern the two most basic properties of the magnetic force (manifestation from a distance and interaction only with specific materials) and therefore we must rule out the possibility that there is something magnetic in the cases of these people.
But if not magnetism, then what?
Sticky Skin?
We may have ruled out the case of magnetism relatively easily, but as a phenomenon it exists up to a point. So what causes it?
Observing again the cases of "magnetic" people, we notice that almost all of them "magnetize" objects on their bare skin, that is, without any clothing in between. So if there was some "invisible" force like magnetism, then since it can "attract" 40+ kg objects with bare skin it should be able to do exactly the same with smaller objects of a few grams over clothing.
Therefore, any interaction must be due to the objects coming into contact with the bare skin of the persons concerned. The obvious answer is that the phenomenon is caused by sweat which increases the friction on our skin and can actually cause quite a few objects to stick to it. But this is not supernatural power, let alone rare. Just take a metal spoon and try to "stick" it to your chest. After a few tries, almost everyone will be able to do it!
"Another simple spoon" but you will think "and other objects of several kilos". I won't argue. But looking a little closer at all the videos and photos that are circulating, it is easy to see that the heavier the object, the more inclined the surface of the skin where it is placed (either they choose the surface of skin that is already inclined like the breast in women, or they lean backwards so that their skin is not perpendicular to the surface of the earth). In short, they assist the friction that develops on their skin by using the force of gravity to their advantage.
We Are All Magnetic!
Of course, this does not mean that man does not have magnetic fields around him. On the contrary, since our brain has its own magnetic field, which interacts with others of the same nature. A typical example are the experiments of the University of Manchester, which proved that by influencing the magnetic field of the human brain, we can influence his behavior to a great extent... even "deactivating" his sense of morality (so that he cannot distinguish right from wrong!).
In short, it would not be an exaggeration to say that all people are magnetic. In fact, understanding and interacting with our magnetic fields can lead us to amazing (and for modern man supernatural) applications such as remote healing, psychological control, etc. The point is to know where to focus using common sense combined with basic scientific concepts.
